Hallo Katie, wir freuen uns sehr, dass du dir einen Moment für unsere Fragen nimmst. Wir hoffen es geht Dir gut. Wir durften heute schon in „Acoustic Album No.8“ hören und sind sehr angetan.

R:A : Nach 7 Jahren ohne Veröffentlichung, die nur mit brandneuen Songs gefüllt war, hast du 2020 „Album No.8“ veröffentlicht. Was war der Grund für die lange Kreationsphase? Waren es die hohen Ansprüche und Erwartungen an dich selbst und die neue Musik oder etwas anderes?

Katie Melua: Ich fing an, mich mit anderen Bereichen als der Musik und dem Plattenmachen zu beschäftigen, in denen Worte als kreative Form verwendet werden. Und das brachte einige neue Studien und Praktiken mit sich, wie zum Beispiel ein Buch von Fiona Sampson mit dem Titel „The Poetry Expert“ und ein Kurs zum Schreiben von Kurzgeschichten an der Faber Academy. Ich liebe es zu lernen und mich auf das Schreiben von Texten spezialisieren zu wollen bedeutet, dass es diese Zeit brauchte, um die Dinge vollständig zu bewältigen.

R:A: Deine wirklich erfolgreiche Karriere begann vor mehr als 17 Jahren! Hättest du dir vor all den Jahren vorstellen können, mit dem 2021er Album „Acoustic Album No.8“ die persönlichsten und berührendsten Songarrangements deiner Karriere zu veröffentlichen?

Katie Melua: Ich bin wirklich stolz auf diese Veröffentlichung. Diese Songs sind in der Tat sehr persönlich und wurden vor der Pandemie in einer großen Orchester- und Bandbesetzung präsentiert, die ich liebe. Aber mangels Tourneen gab es uns Zeit, über die Songs nachzudenken und sie in dieser akustischen und nackten Umgebung zu präsentieren.

R:A: Der Name des Albums scheint eher unspektakulär und ziemlich geradlinig zu sein. Hörer können das 8. Katie Melua-Album in der Akustikversion hören… Eine Künstlerin wie du es bist, gab es wahrscheinlich mehr Gedanken, als das Offensichtliche zu sagen, als es „Album No.8“ zu nennen. Was bedeutet dir der Name noch?

Katie Melua: Der Name ist ein Zeichen der Zeit und eigentlich dachte ich immer, dass die Jugend in unserer Branche das Wichtigste sei, aber nach so vielen Platten schätze ich meine Erfahrung und die Weisheit, die ich gewonnen habe, viel mehr und ich liebe auch die Schönheit der Einfachheit. Album Nr. 8 scheint all dies zu tun.

R:A: Die Songs strahlen in einer noch persönlicheren Note, da die akustisch liebevoll ausgearbeiteten Tracks ein Wohnzimmer/Lagerfeuer – Gefühl wecken. War dieses Ergebnis eine Folge der Pandemiezeit und den dadurch erzwungenen Stillstand des Lebens? Bzw. eine Art Bremsung nach vielen Jahren „Höher, schneller, weiter“?

Katie Melua: Ja, es war absolut das Ergebnis all unserer Leben, die sich von „höher, schneller weiter“ verändert haben, um innezuhalten und Leben und Tod zu priorisieren, worum es bei der Pandemie ging.

R:A: Deine Sicht auf die Liebe hat sich in den letzten Jahren in deinen Liedern verändert. Man hört mittlerweile heraus: Die Liebe ist doch endlich und nicht immer nur vom Wahnsinn begleitet. Denkst du diese „neue“ Sicht hat etwas mit dem erwachsen werden zu tun und dieser Wandel gehört zum Lauf des Lebens dazu?

Katie Melua: Ich denke, mein Standpunkt wird durch das repräsentiert, was zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt in meinem Leben vor sich geht. Ich weiß, dass es andere Phasen geben wird, weißt du zum Beispiel jetzt bin ich in einer neuen Beziehung und ich erlebe wieder verrückte Liebe und ich liebe es. Aber zu der Zeit, als ich an diesen Songs arbeitete, war das das Ende einer Beziehung und ich konnte mich einfach nicht trennen, weil das Thema Liebe für romantische Lieder immer da ist.

R:A: Konntest du Worte schon immer in der für dich bekannten poetischen einfühlsamen Art und Weise in Songs verpacken oder war das ein Lernprozess mit Unterstützung von außen?

Katie Melua: Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich im Laufe der Jahre definitiv dazugelernt habe und ich habe immer an Mentoren geglaubt und mich von denen leiten lassen, die mehr Erfahrung haben als ich. Man darf auch keine Angst davor haben zu scheitern und einfach loszulegen.

R:A: Welche Zusammenarbeit war an dieser Platte für dich aufregender: Die sehr verbundene und vertraute Arbeit mit deinem Bruder Zurab oder einem Künstler wie Simon Goff? Und gab es emotionale Unterschiede?

Katie Melua: Ich arbeite seit 6 Jahren mit meinem Bruder zusammen und es ist eine Ehre, im selben Team wie er zu sein. Simon ist ein britischer Musiker, der in Berlin lebt und eine wirklich interessante Berliner Atmosphäre auf die Platte gebracht hat.

R:A: Wird „Acoustic Album No 8“ ein einmaliges Erlebnis bleiben oder kannst du dir solche Alben in Zukunft noch öfter vorstellen?

Katie Melua: Um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich von Anfang an Songs getestet, um zu sehen, ob sie in einer akustischen Umgebung funktionieren. Und wenn wir wissen, dass dieser Song in dieser Einstellung großartig ist, wird er oft mit vielen sensationellen Musikern und Arrangements produziert. Daher liebe ich es, sowohl in einer akustischen Umgebung aufzutreten als auch mit großartigen Musikern und großartigen Ensembles zu arbeiten und zusammenzuarbeiten. Das macht den Spaß an diesem Job – nicht zu viel zu planen, was man tun wird.

R:A: 9. Hast du Ziele, Pläne und Wünsche für die nächsten 20 Jahre?

Katie Melua: Ich würde gerne eine Familie haben, ich würde gerne weiterhin Platten machen und ich würde gerne mehr aus dem literarischen Bereich in die Welt der Plattenproduktion einbringen.

Hi Katie, we are very thankful that you made some time to answer our questions. We hope you are doing well.  Also we were able to listen to your new album “Acoustic Album No.8” prior release and liked it a lot.

R:A: After 7 whole years without a release filled with only brand new songs, you released “Album No.8” in 2020. What reason was behind the long creation phase? Was it the high standards and expectations in yourself and the new music or something else?

Katie Melua: I started looking into different areas apart from music and record making where they use words as a creative form. And that entailed going on some new studies and practices so for example a book by Fiona Sampson called ‘The Poetry Expert’ and a short story fiction writing course at the Faber Academy. I love to learn and wanting to specialise in lyric writing means that it needed this time for things to get fully homed.

R:A: Your truly successful career started more than 17 years ago! All this years ago, would you have been able to imagine releasing the most personal and touching song arrangements of your career with the 2021 album “Acoustic Album No.8”?

Katie Melua: I’m really proud of this release. These songs are indeed very personal and pre the pandemic they were presented in a big orchestral and band line up which I love. But because of the lack of touring, it gave us time to reflect on the songs and to present them in this acoustic and stripped-naked setting.

R:A: The name of the album does seem to be rather unspectacular and pretty straightforward. Listeners are able to hear the 8th Katie Melua album in the acoustic version… Being an artist like you, there probably were more thoughts than stating the obvious, in naming it “Album No.8”. What else does the name mean to you?

Katie Melua: The name is about marking time and actually I always used tot hink that youth was most important in our industry but after so many records i value my experience and the wisdom i’ve gained so much more and i also love the beauty of simplicity. So Album No.8 seems to do all this.

R:A: All songs shine in your personal note, with them all creating a warm living room/campfire atmosphere through the acoustic, lovely composed tracks. Was this the outcome of the pandemic and life coming to a standstill? Or was it a kind of slowing down after all these years of “higher, faster, further”?

Katie Melua: Yes it absolutely was a result of all our lives changign from „higher, fast furthur to let’s pause and prioritise life and death which is what the pandemic has been about.

R:A: Your point of view of love in your songs has changed over the last few years. Now you can hear: Love is endly and not always accompanied by insanity. Do you think your “new” point of view came through reaching adulthood? And is this change something everyone has to go through?

Katie Melua: I think my point of view is represented by what is going on in my life at a certain given time. I know there will be other phases, you know for an example now i’m in a new relationship and i’m experiencing crazy love again and i love it. But at the time when i was working on these songs it was the end of a relationship and i just wasn‘t able to seperate because the topic of love is always there for romantic songs.

R:A: Were you always able to put words into songs in your wellknown, poetic and sensitve ways, or did you have to learn it with the help from others?

Katie Melua: I feel like I have definitely learnt over the years and I’ve always believed in mentors and being guided by those with more experience than me. You also have to not be afraid to fail and just go for it.

R:A: Which cooperation on the album was more exciting for you: the very united and trusted kind of work with your brother Zurab or working with an artist like Simon Goff? Did you feel some emotional differences?

Katie Melua: I’ve been working with my borther for thelast 6 years and it’s an honour to be in the same team as him. Simon is and briitsh musician who has been living in berlin so he brought a really interesting Berlin atmosphere to the record.

R:A: Will “Acoustic Album No. 8” be an experience of a kind or are you planning on releasing more albums like this in the future?

Katie Melua: To be honest from the very beginning I have always tested songs by seeing if they work in an acoustic setting. And often once we know that that song is great in that setting it gets produced up with lots of sensational musicians and arrangements. So I love both performing in an acoustic setting and working and collaboring with both great musicians and great and ensembles. That’s the fun part of this job – not over-planning what you’re going to do.

R:A: Do you have goals, plans and wishes for the next 20 years?

Katie Melua: I would love to have a family, I would love to keep making records and I’d love to bring more from the literary space into the record making world.
